Application accessibility statement in line with Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018
This accessibility statement applies to the EDINA Consultancy Service website.
This website is run by EDINA for The University of Edinburgh. It introduces EDINA's consultancy services, sets out areas of expertise, shows example case studies, and provides a contact form for potential clients.
This statement was updated in April 2026 following an accessibility evaluation carried out by Robert Villa, EDINA.
To request this statement in an alternative format, such as large print, Braille, audio recording or an accessible PDF, please contact edina@ed.ac.uk.
We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. That means you should be able to:
- navigate the site using a keyboard
- navigate the site using speech recognition software
- listen to the site using a screen reader
- zoom in up to 500% without losing access to content
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings

How accessible the website is
The website is usable across desktop and mobile browsers, supports keyboard-only navigation, works with screen readers, and reflows well at high zoom levels.
We also know that some parts of the website are not yet fully accessible:
- when the mobile menu is open on narrow screens, it can obscure content underneath
Issues identified during the April 2026 review around colour contrast on primary buttons, links, and legal-page section headings have now been fixed.

Technical information about this application's accessibility
EDINA is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard, owing to the non-compliances listed below.
Non accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
- 2.4.11 - Focus Not Obscured (Minimum) (Level AA): on narrow screens, the expanded mobile menu can obscure underlying content.
Disproportionate burden
We are not currently claiming that any accessibility problems would be a disproportionate burden to fix.
Content that's not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
At this time, we do not believe that any of our content is outside the scope of the accessibility regulations.
What we're doing to improve accessibility
Following the April 2026 review, we have already:
- fixed colour contrast issues affecting primary buttons
- fixed colour contrast issues affecting links and section headings on legal pages
- updated the legal-page header to match the main site navigation
- improved the visibility of keyboard focus on buttons by offsetting the focus outline
- fixed the cookie banner so keyboard focus no longer moves to content behind it while the banner is open
- fixed the hidden header logo so it is removed from the keyboard tab order when it is visually hidden on narrow screens
We will continue to review and improve the remaining keyboard and mobile navigation issues identified in the April 2026 evaluation.
Preparation of this accessibility statement
This statement was prepared in April 2026 and is based on an accessibility evaluation carried out by Robert Villa, EDINA, in April 2026.
Testing
The website was last reviewed and tested in April 2026.
Testing was carried out primarily on Windows using Microsoft Edge 147.0.3912.60, Firefox 144.0 64-bit, and Google Chrome 147.0.7727.5. Additional testing was carried out on iOS and Android devices using BrowserStack, and with JAWS on Chrome.
Automated testing
We used a range of automated tools to review the site:
- Google Lighthouse
- Axe DevTools for Chrome
These tools identified issues including colour contrast problems on legal-page headings and links, a colour contrast warning on the "Get in touch" button in the header, and an alt-text warning on the University of Edinburgh logo link. The contrast issues identified in this review have since been fixed. Manual testing confirmed that the logo images have meaningful alternative text.
Manual testing
Manual testing covered keyboard navigation, screen reader behaviour, browser zoom and reflow, browser colour and contrast customisation, and form behaviour.
The review found that:
- the contact form uses native browser validation and clearly indicates the first invalid field when the form is submitted
- the email field checks for the presence of an
@character, while the remaining required fields rely on native browser validation - the website reflows well at high zoom levels, including at 500%, with only minor width constraints on form controls
- there is no flashing content, audio or video content, drag-and-drop interaction, or time-limited functionality
- all main content is available through keyboard navigation and follows a logical reading order
- a visible focus indicator is present for keyboard users
- screen reader testing with JAWS in Chrome found that content, links and buttons were announced in a logical order
- VoiceOver on iOS was able to read the page content
The review also noted that:
- browser and device-level colour changes can reduce the visibility of logos and some form controls
- some iOS menu and footer combinations showed extra list bullets during testing, although navigation remained usable
- TextHelp Read and Write, ZoomText, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and Android TalkBack were not available for testing during this review
